Tripp Massengill Wins EJ Gilchrist Memorial 100 at Orange County Speedway
The Southeast Limited Late Model series came to Orange County Speedway September 24 with a threat of rain hovering around the famed 3/8th mile speedway. But clear skies prevailed and allowed all in attendance to see some exciting racing. Orange County Speedway Late Model regulars Joey Throckmorton and Chuck Lawson along with South Boston Speedway track champion Danny Willis Jr. and part time OCS participate proved early on they were there to defend their turf. Throckmorton and Willis Jr. would make up the front row and the pair was showing why they were crowd favorites as they burnt up the asphalt by setting a blistering pace. But Willis Jr. run for the checkered would come to end on lap 36 as he suffered the first of 2 flats on the evening.
Throckmorton continued to pace the field as Tripp Massengill worked to narrow the gap on Throckmorton. By the time a caution flew lap 63 Massengill had caught Throckmorton which would stage an exciting 2 way battle for the lead till lap 75 with Massengill taking the lead on lap 76 a lead he would not relinquish for the remainder of the event. Although a late caution would allow Throckmorton one last chance to regain the lead but Massengill would not go down easy and retained his lead to cross the stripe victorious winning the inaugural EJ Gilchrist Memorial 100. Throckmorton would come home second followed by Darrel Gilchrist, Trey Marchem and Jake Morris, who finished fourth and fifth respectively
As the 40 Lap Southeast Limited Late Model Challenger division started it was Justin Crider and Jerry Hinesley leading the field to the green. Crider pulled away to a dominating lead at times but at other had to fend off challenges of OCS regular Donald Brace whose engine finally gave up on lap 35. The caution for Brace would allow Noah Tripplett to close up on Crider but to no avail as Crider pulled away to fin the Challenger portion of the EJ Gilchrist Memorial event. Crider was followed by Tripplett, Michael Schwietering, J.D. Eversole and Jerry Hinesley would round out the Top five.
